How To Choose an End Table Lamp

A frequently asked question; what is the best height for a table lamp?  Generally, your lamp should stand between 58-64″ in height from the floors surface. Table and floor lamps should both be in this total height range. It will give a nice flow to your room.

If you’re table is 30″ in high, the table lamp should be stand 28″- 34″ high to the top of the finial. Also, you should consider that when seated – you should not have to stare at the exposed light bulb or socket.

Size and Shape

Put some books under an existing lamp so it is taller, and then compare it with a taller potential new lamp – if it is applicable.

Lampshade Size & Shape

Compare the size of your table to the diameter of your new lamps lampshade. The width of a shade should be no wider than the most narrow dimension of your table. Otherwise, the shade may hang too far over the edge of your table –which is not desirable. This is usually a problem for bedside lamps  or buffet lamps  where the width and depth of the table is usually more narrow.

Lampshades are a main feature of a table lamp – and has a great effect on its style. Sometimes, a cone shape, or ornate shaped lampshade displays a more traditional feeling and a drum shape or vertical shape expresses a more modern or contemporary style. If you’re looking to update a traditional lamp – consider changing your shade to a drum shade.

Bedroom Table Lamps

Lamps for a dresser, bedside table, or buffet table could require some special attention due to the narrow surface – generally they are between 16” and 20” in depth.

  • Shade Depth (front to back): Generally, 14″ – 18″
  • Lamp Height for a Bedside Table Lamp: Generally, 26″ – 33″
  • Lamp Height for a Dresser Table:  Generally, 18″ – 27″

Oval or rectangle shades for Lamps can make great bedside lamps because they tend to be more narrow in depth, and they provide more width that will visually balance out the room on each side of the bed.
